The right way to wash your face
Do you wash your face the proper way? Yes, there is a right and wrong way to do it.
Because we’ve been doing it since we were little, washing our face has become second nature. In fact, for some people, this has been programmed in their minds. As soon as the sun rises in Sydney it’s the first thing they do to start their day or the last thing they do before they go to bed. It’s almost like clockwork. This is okay if they’ve been doing it the right way. But what if they’ve been doing it wrong the whole time?
If you’re concerned that you might belong to the group doing the latter, then this guide will help you correct your face washing method and ensure your face is not only kept clean but also healthy. And as any skin and laser clinic expert would advise, it’s always good to achieve both.
Warm or cold water?
The answer is both. Use warm water first when wetting your face to loosen dirt on your skin. Be careful not to use hot water as it can be drying and harsh to your skin, and can even burst capillaries causing red marks to form on your face. At the last part of the wash, cold water should then be used. Again, you need to be careful not to use freezing cold water as this can also damage your skin. In between these two, use tepid water.
The correct technique
Using your fingertips, lather up with a small amount of cleanser and massage your face in a circular motion. The circles should be moving outward. Spend about 30 seconds to a minute gently cleansing and massaging your face. Start with your forehead, then work your way down to your nose, cheek, and chin. Spend a bit more time on the t-zone and don’t forget your jawline and hairline areas.
Rinse and splash
Rinse the cleanser off your face using your hands. To avoid soap residue build-up that can cause breakouts, make sure that you also rinse off the edges of your face as well as the areas around your ears and nose. The next part is where the cold water will be used. Splash your face two or three times with it to close your pores.
Drying off
Never rub your face with a cloth as this may lead to irritation, stretching and can even help cause wrinkles. Softly dab your face with a towel instead to dry it off. Make sure you always have a clean towel nearby to quickly grab right after you wash your face.
You may think that washing your face is just a simple procedure that can’t possibly lead to having healthy skin. But you couldn’t be more wrong. The simple task of cleaning your face and doing it the right way can do wonders for your skin. It can help avoid skin problems including dryness, oiliness, irritation and breakouts.
