Acne scarring
Acne scars are permanent textural changes and indentations that occur on the skin as a result of severe acne.
Acne cysts are large pus-filled spaces and these destroy tissues and are not replaced during the healing process. When the cyst eventually heals, it usually leaves an indentation (scar) on the face.
Acne scarring on the face appears as damage to the skin texture with depressed (or indented) areas of various sizes.
There are many types of acne scars
Box car acne scars are depressed scars that are shallow to medium in-depth and well-defined edges and commonly located on cheeks and temples. due to the shallow depth of this type of scarring, it'll respond well with various treatments like Fractional Skin Resurfacing with RF, Intensif Microneedling with RF and dermal fillers.
Ice pick acne scars, these scars are deep and narrow and extend into the lower layer of the skin. TCA CROSS (trichloroacetic acid chemical reconstruction of skin scars) is a better treatment rather than fractional due to the depth of the scars. Once the depth of the scars is raised to a more shallow level, then resurfacing with fractional will further improve the scar.
Rolling atrophied and depressed acne scars appears as undulation and depressions on the skin. A number of methods can be used to treat rolling scars and tethered scars including subcisions, fractional resurfacing and dermal fillers. These help to free up bound scars and fill up depressions with collagen. These forms of acne scarring usually require several treatments to get the best outcome.
Mixed acne scars are the most common and will therefore require different types of treatments tailored to their needs.
Red acne scars and macular scars usually present as red areas and are commonly seen around the cheeks and forehead and will usually resolve over 6 to 12 months without treatment. However, to hasten the improvement, Laser Genesis treatment can be performed and may require several treatments.
Lumpy hypertrophic and keloid scars, most commonly seen around the jawline, neck, chest and back areas and can be treated first with corticosteroids injections and may require a few sessions for best results and then follow on with Laser Genesis.
