The Spectra laser peel – how science combats acne, large pores & ageing skin
Clever thinking has gone into the spectra laser treatment, which reduces severe acne, acne scarring, large pores and fine lines, and smooths out uneven skin.
The process is also known as the “carbon laser peel”. This form of anti-acne and skin rejuvenation treatment was developed in Asia and is now used in laser clinics across the world. It is widely promoted as being a healthy alternative to surgery.
Just what is the Spectra Peel laser?
At the centre of the treatment is a highly sophisticated laser machine. At True Skin Cosmetic & Laser Clinic we use Lutronic’s Spectra Peel laser, which is made in South Korea. It is a versatile device. Clinicians can use it at one of the four distinctly different wavelengths. A range of handpieces is available, allowing them to customise treatments further. An aiming beam and a range of power settings deliver energy with minimal damage to tissue.
How is the Spectra laser used?
The procedure for treating acne, enlarged pores and ageing, damaged skin is broadly the same. The process is two-pronged.
Let’s say you have presented at a laser clinic with facial acne, and are undergoing treatment. The clinician begins your treatment by first applying a photo enhancer – a carbon lotion – to your face. The lotion, which will temporarily colour your skin grey, is left in place for 10 minutes so the pores can absorb it. When absorption is complete, the laser takes centre stage.
The clinician will first set it to the “spectra” mode so that it will deliver light pulses slowly, but at a high level of energy. In this phase, the carbon layer will absorb the laser’s energy and gently warm the deeper tissues of the skin. In this first phase, the laser will work on your acne deep in the dermis, stimulating skin cell regeneration and reducing inflammation. The action promotes collagen production, which will improve overall skin tone and elasticity.
In the next step, the laser is set to its “Q-switch” mode and the laser facial peel begins. Now the device peels away the carbon layer on the surface of the skin, safely removing the dead skin cells – in other words, your old skin – while also clearing out the pores and shrinking them. The action rejuvenates the skin’s surface and makes it more resistant to new outbreaks of acne.
When done, the laser phase is complete. Now the clinician will apply a special recovery gel and antioxidants to the area of skin being treated. The gel and the antioxidants will promote healing and skin function to ensure speedy, effective results.
Does a laser face peel hurt?
Any discomfort is minor. Our patients describe the treatment as virtually painless.
