What causes acne and how we can treat it

Having acne can be embarrassing and painful. Sometimes it's tricky to work out the cause of it, what treatment will help and what's going to make it worse. When you have acne, all you want to do is get rid of it, and the good news is that you can. Acne is a medical condition that can have a huge medical and emotional impact, whether as a teenager or adult, but this can be successfully managed.

What causes Acne?

Pimples can appear when the oil glands (pores) get blocked in the skin.

Hormones make the oil gland produce more sebum (oil) and if the pores become blocked, the oil builds up and causes more irritation. Bacteria accumulates in these blocked pores and makes the pimples worse with redness, swelling and tenderness.

Areas most affected are the face, neck, chest, shoulders and upper back which has the highest number of oil glands. Acne usually starts at puberty with an increased level of sex hormones which creates an increase in the size and oil-producing glands. There are some lifestyle factors that can affect acne, such as stress, diet, weight and in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (POS).

Treating Acne

There is no quick fix for acne as it takes time and patience. For mild cases, it can take a couple of weeks and severe cases can take months, but the upside is you will see results along the way.

Seek advice from a medical professional first and not buy anything online just because of a celebrity testimonial which may appear to be a good idea but sometimes using the wrong product can cause more aggravation and can sometimes make the acne worse.

Treating acne starts with good skincare. Using medical-grade and active cosmeceuticals like Synergieskin which are based on stable, high-grade actives that are designed to change and reprogram the skin from within. Synergie products are 100% Australian owned and made, not tested on animals and are CCF (Choose Cruelty Free) accredited.

For more moderate to severe acne, antibiotics are generally used.
